When Coca-Cola moved its headquarters from the outskirts of Toronto to downtown on King Street above the Toronto Sun building in 2013, people across the city buzzed. It was a bold move and possibly foretold what realtors have been saying about the city: The exodus to the suburbs is ending, and a renewed desire to embrace the heart of Ontario’s capital has blossomed. The results of the 100,000 square foot Coca-Cola project garnered kudos from designers and laypeople alike; yet what no one realized were the tremendous efforts of companies like Choice Office Installations which was integral to the completion of the interior three-story structure.
Hired by the dealer from whom Coca-Cola chose its furniture because of the firm’s relationship and noted ability, Choice Office Installations spent one month working in the older building that was being renovated to accommodate Coca-Cola’s approximately 400 employees, as well as the “new build” areas. Throughout their time on the project, Choice Office Installations had to navigate the natural pitfalls of every similar job site – dirt, construction workers, other contractors – while providing a pristine, flawless execution and finish. This was particularly challenging given that Coca-Cola’s interior furnishings are mostly white.
The resulting product is a shining example of Canadian ingenuity and modern style. The glass building glistens in all seasons, and the high-vaulted ceiling in the atrium invites praise. At the unveiling of the Coca-Cola headquarters, enthusiastic compliments abounded for the “refreshing” design, street-level lobby, art made from Coca-Cola ephemera, abundant natural light sources, interactive lounge seating and uniquely “zoned” private/public spaces.
